Brand History

The 1920s were an exciting time in the world of coffee – industrial progress continued, and café culture flourished in European cities, so solutions for efficient coffee grinding became increasingly in demand. The company was founded in 1924 in Hamburg as Stawert Mühlenbau GmbH & Co. KG, which manufactured grinders for both coffee and other food products. The Mahlkönig brand (from the German for “king of grinding”) was registered that same year.

Since the 1960s, Mahlkönig has specialized in the manufacture of coffee grinders, becoming one of the industry leaders. In 2007, the company merged with the Swiss grinder manufacturer Ditting HEMRO AG. Today, Mahlkönig is a global player in the premium segment – you’ll find its grinders in specialty coffee shops, hotels, roasteries, and competitions around the world.

Where can Mahlkönig grinders be used?

In cafés:

  • We recommend the E65S / E65S GbW – premium espresso grinders that ensure fast and quiet grinding. Also worth noting is the E80S GbW – a hard-working machine for high-traffic cafés with heavy espresso demand.
  • EK Omnia / EK43 – ideal for filtered coffee, brewing larger batches, and tastings.

In restaurants, hotels, and at banquets:

  • Guatemala, EK43, E65S/E80S – these grinders can handle everything from daily espresso and filtered coffee for the breakfast buffet to the demands of large events.

In offices:

  • When looking for a high-quality espresso grinder to pair with a professional coffee machine, customers often choose the compact E65S or another “barista-grade” model. This ensures a consistent grind even when brewing 200+ cups a day, typically in large office buildings or coworking spaces.

At home:

  • The X54 is recommended for home baristas who want professional-grade quality for everything – from espresso to French press. The X64 SD (the latest model) – a single-serve grinder with 64 mm discs, zero retention, and precise micro-adjustment – will be ideal for particularly demanding home enthusiasts.

How to choose the most suitable Mahlkönig grinder?

1.Based on daily volume

  • About 50–80 cups per day – home / small office: X54 or other compact solutions.
  • 80–200 cups per day – a small café or restaurant: E65S.
  • 200+ cups per day or very busy flow – E80S GbW, EK43 / EK Omnia in combination with an espresso grinder.

2. According to the type of coffee

  • Espresso only – E-series models, such as the E65S, E80S, and GbW.
  • Espresso, filter coffee, and other types – espresso grinders (E65/E80) and universal models (EK43, EK Omnia) or the X54 for home use.

3. Based on space and ergonomics

  • Consider the space on the counter, the noise level (quieter grinders are a great advantage in the office and at home), and the electrical power.

4.Based on the budget and service model

  • Both purchase and rental options are available. For business customers, Rocket Bean can offer coffee grinders as part of an equipment and coffee supply package. If you’d like a customized offer for your space (café, office, hotel), Rocket Bean’s business consultation will help you choose the most suitable model and configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions About Mahlkönig grinders

Are Mahlkönig grinders only suitable for professionals?
No. Professional models (E65, E80, EK43, etc.) are designed primarily for cafés and businesses, while the X54 and X64 SD are specifically designed to deliver professional-quality results and ease of use in a home setting.
Can a single grinder be used to grind both espresso and filter coffee?
Technically, yes – especially with universal models like the EK43, EK Omnia, or X54. However, in a professional setting, separate grinders are often used for espresso and filter coffee for the sake of convenience and consistency.
How does the EK43 differ from the E65/E80 series grinders?
The EK43 / EK Omnia is a versatile café-grade grinder featuring extra-large 98 mm discs and a vertical grinding chamber – ideal for espresso, filter coffee, tastings, and the sale of ground coffee. The E65/E80 is a specialized espresso grinder designed for fast and ergonomic operation, featuring portafilter holders and Grind-by-Time or Grind-by-Weight functions.
What should you do if the grinder starts grinding unevenly or the coffee tastes different?
First, check the grind setting, the cleanliness of the grinder, and the freshness of the beans. If the problem persists, contact Rocket Bean customer service – the grinder may need to be calibrated or the discs replaced.
How often should the grinder discs be replaced?
It depends on the model and workload. For example, the service life of the EK43 discs is estimated at around 6,000 kg of coffee, and that of the E65S at around 800 kg for a medium grind. Under heavy use, this often means replacing the discs every 1–2 years; under lighter use, less frequently.
